All of our courses are taught in stable, easy to use sea kayaks that will be suited to your body size and comfort level.

We can provide the kayaks and all requisite gear, all you need to provide is relevant clothing such as rashies (preferably not cotton tops)  to get wet in, appropriate footwear and a sense of adventure!

Courses Offered:

Course NameIntro to Kayaking
Duration:  3 Hours (8.30 AM-12 PM for all dates)
Upcoming Dates:  Please check on-line, or call us,  for up coming dates
(Please turn up 15 mins before commencement of the lesson)
Description:
This is our simplest introductory course, where we will focus on introducing the basic concepts that will allow you to be self-sufficient and efficient in your paddling.  We will cover the four basic strokes (Sweeps, Forward, Reverse, and Draw) that will allow you to learn to manoeuvre your kayak (ie keep it going straight!) and allow you to enjoy the process of paddling.  After covering basic strokes, we will delve into the fun world of assisted rescues that will allow you to safely and easily re-enter your kayak in the unlikely event of a capsize.

Prerequisites:
   None!
Course Size:   Minimum # of Students: 3, Maximum: 6
Price:  $75 per person (plus kayak rental, should you need a boat)

Course Name:  Beginners Sea Kayaking Course
Duration:  All Day (8.30 AM-4 PM for all dates)
Upcoming Dates:  Sun. June 11th; Sunday June 18th; Sunday July 2nd; Sunday July 16th. (Please turn up 15 mins before commencement of the lesson)

Description:
This is our most comprehensive beginner course.  We spend the morning working on the same strokes as in Intro to Kayaking (Sweeps, Forward, Reverse, Draws) but with the extra time you get to practice these strokes until they are natural and instinctive.  After a long lunch break (there is good take-away within walking distance of us at the Spit, or you can bring a packed lunch) we will hit the water in the afternoon and go on a paddle designed to implement the strokes learned in the morning with a special focus on steering with minimum energy and an efficient forward stroke (kayakers are notoriously lazy, we like to go a long way with only a little energy).  Then we will spend the remainder of the afternoon performing assisted rescues as well as the all important Paddle Float Self-Rescue, which allows you to paddle confidently, knowing that should you capsize, you will be able to get back in on your own!  This course is designed to be an intensive course, but not a physically demanding one.  We place an emphasis on long and frequent rest breaks, and no special fitness levels are required since kayaking should be for all ages and sizes!

Prerequisites:
   None!
Course Size:   Minimum # of Students: 3, Maximum: 6
Price:  $119 per person (plus kayak rental, should you need a boat)

Course Name: Private Instruction 1.5hrs
When: Saturday afternoons . Please call to arrange a time.

Description:  In a private course the student is in charge, and we will build our lesson around your desires.  We can cover a basic introduction to kayaking, an Eskimo Rolling clinic, or even an introduction to multi-day touring.  Call us to discuss your kayaking goals, and we will organize a learning sequence appropriate for your needs.

Price: $135 per person (plus kayak rental, should you need a boat)

Tuition Principles:
Unity, Efficiency, and Grace

We believe that quality is far more valuable than quantity in our tuition program.  We believe that kayak instruction, like life,  should be looked on as a never ending process, and it is our policy that we will lead students along the path that best suits their individual needs.  Further, Sydney Harbour Kayaks curriculum is a Holistic one, where the whole is more valuable than the sum of its constituent parts.  Our basic Holistic Principles are:

Unity:
Our goal as paddlers is to be connected to our natural surroundings (specifically, the water) through our boats, paddles, and bodies.  The more complete and harmonious the connection, the better the paddler.
Efficiency
It is not enough for us to simply cover distance or perform manoeuvre, our goal as paddlers is to achieve a desired outcome with the greatest economy of motion.  We are attempting to get maximum output with minimum input.
Grace:
When you are paddling with both efficiency and unity, then grace, or beauty, characterizes your paddling.  Sydney Harbour Kayaks goal is to teach people to be graceful paddlers.

The beauty of the Holistic Principles is that they can be applied to all aspects of paddling.  We take pride in our students, and we judge our tuition program by the quality of the paddlers it produces.

Our Instructors are certified by Australian Canoeing and the British Canoe Union.
